As far as I can remember, there weren't any such "troubles" after either of our referendums. I could be wrong but I seem to recall that after the first night, everyone went home and there was no violence. I hope things quiet down in the UK too.
I agree with you that involvement in politics should be more than simply marking an X on a ballot every four or so years. But things are the way they are because people feel that their voices are not being heard. We take democracy for granted while in other parts of the world people are still dying for the right to vote.
