I was referring to the importance that people let some political issue have in their lives rather than politics in general. Politicians generally rank pretty high on the list of least loved professions (along with lawyers, and isn't it a sad commentary on our times that two occupations dealing with the law should attract such low regard... but I digress) but they fulfill an essential role. How well they do it is another topic entirely.
On my side of the pond, almost 20 years after the second referendum, there are still people who cannot talk about the issue without getting highly emotional. About 10 days ago, I heard a debate on the radio between two politicians from the era, one from the "yes" side and the other from the "no" side, and they came this close to personal insults. The show host, who was expecting an animated discussion but obviously not this, lost control of the debate.
So yeah, healing takes a long time.
Another thing that happened here is that once the threat has passed, all of a sudden giving the losing "yes" side what was promised doesn't seem as necessary. And other parties also get into the act, asking for this and that. I think some of this may already be happening in the UK, with Wales and Northern Ireland wanting a piece of the action.
Time will tell if events unfold in the UK as they did here.
When you speak of "trouble" in Glasgow, do you mean vandalism? If so, that could be related to the referendum, but it could also be bums and hooligans taking advantage of the situation.
