I am relieved DA, and I am pleased that it was a moderately convincing majority because that will perhaps help to heal some of the bad feeling and division that was created during a somewhat acrimonious campaign.For me most of the bile was coming from the 'yes' side.
Whilst the 'yes' campaign was broadly spread across the political and social spectrum(as was 'Better Together'), it was always Nationalist led and driven. At the heart of Scottish Nationalism is a hatred of the English, and I could never vote for that.
The fact is, everything good that has ever happened in these islands, every piece of social justice legislation be it the creation of the welfare state, the national health service, even devolved government itself, which allowed this referendum to happen, has been brought about by the struggle and sacrifice of the broad labour movement of Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland i.e. the United Kingdom. Narrow nationalism based on hatred could only divide us.
There has been one very positive result of this referendum, and that has been the re awakening of people to the democratic process, that they can make change. People registered and voted in unprecedented numbers, and it became clear through the campaigns 'yes' and 'no', that there is a huge appetite for change to the status quo of Westminster politics. I believe that desire for change is spread throughout the U.K. and change is now inevitable.
The first job in hand for working people in these islands is to make sure that in next years General Election we remove the Tory/Lib Dem coalition Government and their austerity programme which is wreaking havoc in our communities. There is a different way, and the current Labour leadership who think they can deliver Tory austerity with fairness and compassion, better realise this quickly or they are finished.
British politics is changed forever, and again Scots have been in the vanguard as they have been so often and in so many areas, in this 300 year plus Union. Don't let them divide us.
