There's something endearingly insular about Goats Head Soup - not any of the songs are party-compatible. So I think it fits fall/winter, when we tend to be inside and, consequently, inside our own heads more. There is of course the literal song, "Winter" (which I'll always interpret as being about a dead lover).

"Time Out of Mind" has seen a lot of playtime, lately, speaking of mortality. The recent New Pornographers album ain't half bad, either.

Devilsadvocate: anyone who's nervous about winter has every right to be. My least favorite season by a huge leading margin, and it just seems to get worse, every year.
