Petrol music/Phony music/Doggy music/Fab music

Well it’s hard to believe that it’s September already, where did the summer go? It’s also time to get week 786 of our Stones poll going, and this week’s question asks this:’Petrol Blues' vs 'Petrol Gang', which version of this song do you like better? Recorded on January 5, 1978 as 'Petrol Gang', with just Mick (on piano and vocals) and Stu (on percussion), the song, many years later would be edited down big time and made into a short song retitled ’Petrol Blues' and released on the reissued Some Girls CD in 2011. Why the song was edited so much was never explained, but which version of this song do you dig more?

Usually, as you know, I like to have the songs in our VS polls listed with a link to their music so you can have a listen before you vote, but I could not do that this week since I couldn’t find 'Petrol Gang' anywhere on line to link to it. But here are the lyrics to the 2 songs: 'Petrol Gang' and ’Petrol Blues' Lyrics, in case you like to look at them first before you vote. When you’re ready to vote in this week’s Stones’ poll, just click here: Stones Weekly Poll.

In last week’s Stones poll we asked: 'Street Fighting Man' vs 'Pay Your Dues', which version of this one song do you like better?. The final results to this one weren’t close at all. To see which song ended up on top and by how much, just click on this link: Stones Weekly Poll - week 785– poll results. I’ll also add this result to the Stones VS Page under “songs”.

Over at the Classic Rock Poll it’s week 428 and we’ll be running the usual 2 poll questions for the week. Here is the first question: What is the best Rock song about fake or phony people? By “phony” we mean people – like politicians, who are as fake inside as any human being can be. People who lie, or just those who you could never trust will also be listed. By “fake”, again it can mean the same as phony, but it also includes people who aren’t real, that are fictional. Although in this case, I’m only listing such fictional people who many though were real people, or perhaps characters in movies, or maybe the fictional person was portrayed as being phony in the song. I think you’ll get the drift when you see the list. To see this week’s first rock poll list, click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

Our VS Rock poll this week asks:'Hound Dog' (by Big Mama Thornton) vs 'Hound Dog' (cover by Elvis Presley), which version of this song is best?.

This song was written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller for Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton back in 1952 and released early in ’53, and was a big hit for her, going to #1 on the charts and staying there for seven weeks! Then in 1956 Elvis released a cover of the song and not only did it also go to #1, it stayed there for 11 full weeks and became one of his most popular songs to sing live for years to come. Poor Mama Thornton felt that after The King’s version was released, that her song was stolen away from her by Elvis, and I guess in a way it was, as most forgot that she even sang it.

So whose version of the song do you like more? There will be links to both takes at the voting page so you can have a listen before you vote. To cast your vote in week’s VS poll, click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

In last week’s first Rock poll we asked: What is the best rock song that has a day of the week included in its title? (Part 3 of 3) The top 3 picks were: Ruby Tuesday - The Rolling Stones (20.2%), Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting) - Elton John (12.9%), and Saturday In The Park – Chicago ( 12.5%).

To see the full, final results in the voting, just click on: Classic Rock Poll week 427. The final Top 10 Songs are also listed at the Top Ten Lists, Page, 9.

In last week’s VS poll we asked this question : 'Whole Lotta Love' (by Led Zeppelin) vs 'You Need Loving' (by The Small Faces), vs 'You Need Love (by Muddy Waters) which song is best?

The final results weren’t close. To see them, click on the following link: Classic Rock VS Poll week 427. You can also check out the final results at the Classic Rock’s site’s VS page.

Now to the Beatles’ poll where it’s week 181, and we will ask this: ‘Get Back ‘(Single version) vs ‘Get Back’ (Let It Be version) vs ‘Get Back’ (Let It Be... Naked version), which version is best? This song (with Billy Preston on piano) was supposed to be the title cut to the Beatles album Get Back which never happened, and over a year later, the LP was released and retitled as Let it Be. But the single was released on time in April of 1968, and like all Beatle songs was a major hit. The album version, which had a different beginning and a different ending (taken from the live rooftop concert), came out 1 year and 1 month later. Then in 2003 when Let It Be... Naked came out, another take of the song was used and it too had a different ending.

Which version of the song is your favorite? To vote in this poll, just click on: Beatles Weekly Poll, and yes, you can listen to each version of the song at the voting page before you cast your vote.

In last week’s Beatle poll we asked: Which song by another band or artist sounds the most like a Beatles song? Yes, we did seem to have some fun with this question and the top 3 picks ended up being: ‘Lies’ by The Knickerbockers (19.3%), ‘Come And Get It’ by Badfinger (17.4%), and ‘I'm A Believer’ by The Monkees (15.9%). Excellent picks indeed!

To see the full, final results from the voting, click on: Beatle’s Weekly Poll – week 180. The top results will also show on the: Beatles Miscellaneous Poll Page at the domain’s Lennon Site.

Thanks for voting in this week’s polls! I hope all of my fellow Gassers who have off from work tomorrow for the Labor Day holiday will enjoy themselves.
