Well like I say I'm not an American, so I don't have day to day experience of the state of race relations or social integration, mobility etc. So if someone who is an American tells me that black people in America don't face any more prejudice or inequality etc, than any other group of people, then maybe I have to listen to that and accept it, even if looking at it from afar it doesn't seem to be the case.

I know you think that slavery, lynching and the civil rights movement etc are from a very long time ago, but they are not, in historical terms they are recent American history. Certainly some of it is within living memory (when the civil right movement was at it's height the band we gather here to celebrate had already had a few hits). So even if things have moved on considerably for African Americans, and I don't doubt they have, what I was wondering was, how much of that recent history still feeds attitudes when very emotive events like Ferguson

crop up?

On the subject of African Kings selling their people into slavery, therefore African Americans were done wrong by their own kind, I think you need to tread carefully. It seems only a short step away from excusing American (and European)involvement in slavery, or if not excusing it, justifying it. You know, "well their own people were selling them" so.......
