Yes hard though it might be to believe,I agree that they are humans like us, and as individuals can make mistakes. However as a body, a force, I don't think they behave as individuals.
Without going into all the in's and out's of what I think the real purpose of the 'gendarme' is, suffice to say cultures develop within these forces which as far as I can see,until recently, have gone largely unchecked. There has been hostility directed at any group that fitted the bill from their perspective,be it longhairs,non whites,gays etc etc. They don't need a reason other than that to go on the rampage. I mean, what reason did you give them to literally abduct and assault you?
I suppose I am talking largely from my observations of the British police, and in particular but by no means only, the Metropolitan Police(London). They have been shown to be institutionally racist, and corrupt from top to bottom. From what I have seen I have no reason to believe that police forces in the U.S., have been or are,any different.
You make a good point about 'playing the race card', and I have no doubt it gets played here as well. In fact as the police have at last been coming under more scrutiny,it's becoming clear that for fear of being accused of being racist, they have been turning a blind eye to crimes that have been carried out by groups from 'ethnic minorities'.
Only yesterday a major report into events in Rotherham in Yorkshire strongly criticised the police. British Pakistani men had been targeting girls as young as twelve, many in local authority care, to be used as sex objects, transported from town to town in England to be repeatedly raped, and tortured. It is known that at least 1,400 young girls were subjected to this. The police and the Council authorities(at the top)knew of this and supressed complaints and reports.
The conclusion is they did nothing because they were terrified in the light of past criticism, of being seen as racist, and perhaps provoking racial unrest in the communities. I know of several other cases where the police have been similarly criticised.
So that is the sad state of affairs in failed multicultural Britain, racist institutions whose top brass supress reports of crime, and take no action for fear of being branded racist.
That said, I should of course point out that when there has been explosions of violence on Britain's streets following the death of a member of an 'ethnic community' at the hands of the police, subsequent inquiries have always shown that the death was a trigger for events following years of harassment and ill treatment at the hands of the police and just general neglect of the community. I wonder if it will be shown that there has been underlying resentment in Ferguson?
I take your points on the killing of black people by black people, and the killing of white people by black people. Considering your point on white mobs not doing this or that when a black person kills a white person, it struck me that it's not that long ago that when a black person killed a white person, a white mob would lynch that black person. In fact the black person didn't need to have killed anyone, or done anything even. I wonder how much of that experience is stored in the collective psyche, black and white?
