A 12oz tumbler would be perfectly acceptable for quaffing your broon ale in Geordie land. From a pint glass? Well that's a whole different matter.
You are correct, beer always tastes better out of a glass in much the same way tea always tastes better from a china cup(with saucer). Make sure you're not overdoing it with the chilling of your ale, leave that for the lagers.
