RE: Some replies and my picks

"Pay Your Dues" in the Stones poll. I think that dropping Rich Grech's wonderful electric violin was a big mistake.

Agree. Grech made that thing sound like a heavy metal instrument the way he played it. It would have been like the Stones dropping BJ's heavy metal sounding sitar from PIB, when you do something with a instrument that nobody has ever done before - and it sounds that good, you don't drop it. Perhaps the Glimmers didn't like how it sounded??

...."Saturday Night Special". That is one of those songs which are popular but that I simply don't "get".... The lyrics are a bit of a mystery, something of a surprise coming from a man who loved to hunt and owned several hunting guns.

Wow, really, I totally got it from the start! It's the typical liberal gun owners stance on gun control, and there are liberals who own guns (like myself). Outlaw the guns that are only used to kill or hurt people and leave the rest of our guns alone. That would solve a lot of the problems we have with guns, we do need to have gun control, but not for all guns. I mean, you never see anybody being held up with a hunting rifle. As Ronnie sang, "Hand guns are made for killin', they ain't no good for nothin' else". I think that lyric explains how a gun owner can support gun control.

Maybe it's just me, but none of the songs in the Beatles poll particularly remind me of the Beatles.

Again, wow! You can't hear the Beatles in most of those songs? I got a feeling you may not know many of them, perhaps a visit to YouTube might help. In fact, some of the lesser known songs on the list that have no votes yet sound the most like Beatles songs and nobody is voting for them because many Beatle fans more than likely don't know the songs. Take a listen to "Lies" (well that one most know), 'Sub-Rosa Subway", or Utopia's "I Just Wanta Touch You" is a total rip-off of the Beatles. Plus a few of the songs, like "Laura" by Billy Joel, and "Veronica" by Elvis Costello, were recorded purposely to sound like the Beatles, in fact, Paul plays bass on the EC song.

Except for the Badfinger song, but that's because I know that George Harrison was somehow involved with that band (I don't quite remember in what capacity though).

George produced part of their LP Straight Up and played slide guitar on some of their songs. But on the song listed, "Come and Get It", that one was written by Paul McCartney and he gave Badfinger the demo of the song he made, then they recorded it.

Keno, glad you seem to be up and about. Let us know when your E mail is fixed. I sent an E mail last week, but I guess it never made it!

The email started to work again yesterday, but it appears not all of what I'm sending out is getting to people, including you, as I wrote you back after I posted the poll thread last nite. I'll try sending it out to you again.

Here are my picks:

Stones Poll: SFM, it has much better lyrics, but if you go with the music only, I would say PYD for the reason I noted above.

Rock Poll: There are 5 or 6 songs I want to vote on, but I have to go with the Monkees "Pleasant Valley Sunday" in the end.

VS Poll: Led Zep's song sounds light years better than the other 2 (which aren't bad songs by any means). The Zeppelin song is a rip off of Dixon's song, yes, but as I noted, that isn't what this poll's question is about.

Fab Poll: How can you not vote for "Lies"? Even if so many other those other songs sound like the Beatles, I believe no other song comes as close as "Lies" does. People actually felt it really was Lennon singing the song when it was released. My second pick would be the Stones "Wanna Hold You", even Keith said he was giving a nod to the pop side of Lennon/McCartney when he wrote it and recorded it. Plus the Badfinger song sounds so much like the Fabs too. Really, several good ones to pick from on that list.
