SFM VS PYD/Days of the week/Beatle sounding songs

It’s time to get week 785 of our Stones poll underway, and the question this week’s asks this:'Street Fighting Man' vs 'Pay Your Dues', which version of this one song do you like better? Recorded in 1968, 'Pay Your Dues' was of course the original title of the song which covered an entirely different subject matter than what 'Street Fighting Man' would turn out to address. The music to both versions of the song was identical, other than the wonderful, wild sounding electric violin (played by Rick Grech) was removed from SFM. But the lyrics to the 2 versions were totally different.

So which version of this song do you dig more? For those of you who have never heard PYD, there will be a YouTube link to it (and for SFM, too) that also includes the song’s lyrics, over at the voting page, but just remember, rate the songs only, not the videos.

To vote in this week’s Stones’ poll, just click here: Stones Weekly Poll.

In last week’s Stones poll we asked: 'Sing This All Together' vs 'Sing This All Together (See What Happens)', which version of the song is better? . The final results to this one could not have been any closer, as just one vote separated the two. To see which song ended up on top, just click on this link: Stones Weekly Poll - week 784 – poll results. I’ll also add this result to the Stones VS Page under “songs”.

Now to the Classic Rock Poll, where it’s week 427, and we’ll be running the usual 2 poll questions for the week. Here is the first question: What is the best rock song that has a day of the week included in its title? (Part 3 of 3) The final part to this question contains 16 excellent songs that we voted for in parts 1 and 2, and now it’s time to vote a final time to see which song is the best of the bunch. To take part in this week’s first rock poll, click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

Our VS Rock poll this week asks this:'Whole Lotta Love' (by Led Zeppelin) vs 'You Need Loving' (by The Small Faces), vs 'You Need Love (by Muddy Waters) which song is best?.

Boy oh boy did Led Zep take a lot of heat on their song, 'Whole Lotta Love', since they didn’t credit Willie Dixon, who wrote the Muddy Waters song, and from which a lot of the lyrics were lifted from in the Zeppelin song. IMO, they deserved it, and in time they were sued for plagiarism - and lost! But why was The Small Faces let off the hook, when they did the very same thing to the very same song - and they did it first? Strange, but some rock fans still today, when they hear 'Whole Lotta Love', will say something like, “this is a rip-off of the Small Faces’ song”, as they have no clue that the Small Faces song was a rip-off of Dixon’s song, too.

But for this question, we are not addressing the plagiarism issue, but only asking which of these 3 songs sounds best to your ears. Of course, you can and perhaps should consider that material was stolen from the Muddy Waters/ Willie Dixon song, but if you feel one of the other songs is still that much better, then you should vote for it.

Yes, there will be links to all 3 songs at the voting page so you can have a listen before you vote. To cast your vote in week’s VS poll, click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

In last week’s first Rock poll we asked: What is the best rock song that has a day of the week included in its title? (Part 2 of 3) Nine songs made the final cut from Part 2, they are: ‘Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting)’ - Elton John (15.2%); ‘Tuesday's Gone’ - Lynyrd Skynyrd (13.5%); ‘Saturday In The Park’ – Chicago (13.3%); ‘Friday On My Mind’ - The Easybeats (13.1%); ‘Another Saturday Night’ - Sam Cooke (12.7%); ‘Black Friday’ - Steely Dan (6.4%); “Saturday Night Special’ - Lynyrd Skynyrd (6.4%); ‘Another Saturday Night’ - Cat Stevens (6.2%); and ‘Saturday Night At The Movies’ - The Drifters (4.5%).

To see the full, final results in the voting, just click on: Classic Rock Poll week 426. The final Top 10 Songs after Part 3 is voted on, will be listed at the Top Ten Lists, Page, 9.

In last week’s VS poll we asked this question : 'Stay' (original by Maurice Williams and The Zodiacs) vs 'Stay' (cover by Jackson Browne), which version is best? Just like with the Stones VS poll last week, the same deal took place with the vote for this question, with the winner holding on to first place by just one single vote!.

To see which version came in first, click on the following link: Classic Rock VS Poll week 426. You can also check out the final results at the Classic Rock’s site’s VS page.

At the Beatles’ poll it’s week 180, and this week we ask: Which song by another band or artist sounds the most like a Beatles song? When we asked this question a few years ago at the Stones poll we had a lot of fun with it, and I believe it will be a great question to use at the Beatles poll, too. Now the Beatles did have 2 different sounds, but most of these songs that we will vote on sound more like the pop music they wrote and recorded, but still, not all, some sound like their late ‘60s music.

To vote in this poll, just click on: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week’s Beatle poll we asked: When listening to the Beatles music, what do you prefer to play, their early '60s pop, or late '60s rock? Finally a poll result this week that wasn’t at all close, in fact, it was such a large landslide result that I was a bit surprised, although I expected that the top choice would be the one picked, I didn’t think it would be so by such a large margin.

To see the final tally from the voting, click on: Beatle’s Weekly Poll – week 179.

As usual, I thank all of you who took/take part in the voting each week! It sure is a lot of fun seeing how the answers to our questions turns out each week!
