You know manny I hadn't really considered the difference being alive or dead made in relation to the point I was making.
On reflection, the examples I gave were of people who are dead, and of course to qualify as an official 'saint' you have to be dead . So maybe as you suggest there is a difference between the living and the dead to be taken into account. You could be also be right that there may be a softening in our hearts, there is also a notion that it is not the done thing to speak ill of the dead, and of course as far as saints are concerned, they are beyond criticism. Even the ones we have created ourselves it would seem. The dead ones of course are not around to respond to any criticism, so maybe they are an easy target, and we see an unfairness in that.
I can however think of some people who in certain circles ,even when they were alive, were beyond criticism. Woe betide you if you pointed out something that might tarnish the image. Che Guevara, and Yasser Arafat are two that I am thinking of here.
I get the feeling that those who have elevated their heroes to sainthood are reluctant to hear or accept any criticism of them because they fear it would undermine what it was that made them their hero in the first place. That might call for a bit of re-examination, not just of their hero, but of themselves. That could prove uncomfortable.
As far as John Lennon and any failings in his private life are concerned, I don't see why they should necessarily detract from his public life and work. That would hold true for many well known artists, and in music Woody Guthrie and Brian Jones spring to mind. Iffy private lives, but loved by millions for their work.
I think a bit of balance and objectivity is the way to go when considering anybody's life and work, and be prepared to act as the old advocatus diaboli now and then. Ask the awkward question.
