I am on the record for saying that the Brussels recording is the best ever. I stand by that. I'm also on the record for saying that Brussels is superior to two other legendary concert recordings, the Philadelphia 1972 recordings and the Perth 1973 recordings. I still hold the view the Brussels is better sonically. But today I gave a serious listen Philly and Brussels, something I confess I have not properly done before. Prior to today, I had listened to them only on y computer, which can't possibly give you a good idea of their sonic qualities.
First, I thoroughly enjoyed the music itself. There is a very good reason why these two concert recordings are frequently compared to each other and to Brussels, and why they are also viewed as being among the best bootlegs ever. And as for the sound quality, they're actually not that bad. The sound quality is of a level that makes them quite enjoyable. I've heard other Stones boots where the band sounds awesome but the sound is so poor that it renders it unenjoyable. To me, Knebworth kind of falls short in this area, but maybe I need to work harder to enjoy it as it does indeed have it's moments artistically.
