My understanding is that the song is about kicking heroin, and Keith used his young daughters name as a metaphor
That's another rumor, the part about Keith using his daughter's name in the song, since when he wrote the song, her name wasn't Angela, it was "Dandelion" at the time, and she was renamed by Keith's mother who hated that name, and who took over raising her from when she was around age 6 or so, but her name wasn't changed until after tha time. I noted all of this in my book, Keith at first wrote the song using Anita's name as he went along writing it, but he changed it to "Angie" when he was done since the song wasn't about her.
I also never heard that the song was about heroin... plus he wasn't yet trying to kick H at that time. The reason why his daughter was sent to live with his mother (a few years after he wrote the song), was because he and Anita were still both junkies, and when the song was written, the girl was just a baby. Keith didn't kick H until around 1979 or so, after his arrest in Canada took place.
