I went to this site www.ranker.com and they have a list of 47 of the best 'art rock' bands as voted for by people visiting the site. The Doors don't feature
I'm not impressed with that list, although most of the bands listed were into Art Rock at least a bit, but they are missing so many others besides the Doors, perhaps because so few have voted, or some don't know what Art Rock really is. The Doors were Art Rock, but they were other things, too. Think of the song "The End", that's an Art Rock song for sure. Alice Cooper's "Ballad of Dwight Fry" was as great as Art Rock ever got, a lot of what Bowie did was too. Really there was a lot of it in the late '60s and early '70s. Art Rock was part experimental rock, part psychedelia, part avant garde, and even part folk. Devo was not Art Rock, I can't believe 11 people, who clearly don't know what Art Rock is, voted for them! They were New Wave all the way, and they flat out sucked and were everything that was wrong with New Wave. Laurie Anderson is in last place there, yet she was for sure Art Rock, more so than many others on that list. Maybe we should run a poll here with that question, we'd get more votes in a week then they have gotten in now, well, it doesn't say how long that poll been's up.
