no way the Doors were just a "pub band that got lucky", in fact, they weren't a pub band at all, they were the first "art rock" band out there, like Jim or not, and they weren't just different than the other bands of the time, they were flat out light years better than most bands in their delivery and their outlook on music.
What Keno said. 110%.
Robbie and Ray were both classically trained. They were both pretty damn good at their instrument.
Jim had zero voice training, but then neither did Mick, John, Paul or 99% of the other vocalists out there. What Jim did have was an exceptionally beautiful voice. Which he unfortunately didn't take care of.
The Doors seem to be a band that you either love or hate. I know people in both camps. And I respect both, even if I don't agree with the "hate" camp.
As an aside, "pub bands that get lucky" usually "get lucky" through many, many long hours of rehearsals and hard work. It can be argued that every band started out as a "pub band". The Stones got their break at the Marquee. The Beatles spent a long time playing grueling sets in a Hamburg joint. Starting off as a bar band was hardly unique to The Doors.
