RE: Perfect Songs nsc

"Ballerina" by Van Morrison - He knows it's over, but he's just too entranced by her beauty, comparing her cold grace and emotional distance to a dancer on a far away stage. He can only observe, but never comprehend. Just painful stuff, but unlike other songs about heartbreak, there's no anger or resentment. The compassion, maturity, and wisdom on this album is humbling. And all that backed by incredible musicianship.

"Time" by Tom Waits - American cities were envisioned as bastions of possibility. The album Rain Dogs, and particularly this song, makes no secret of the fact that time has turned them into deadends, broken down gutters and ethical mazes. "Time" is a funeral hymn to that world of possibilities. Memory puts a saint in every dream.

Dear Prudence - forget "All You Need is..." - this is Beatles' real anthem of Love. The songs Lennon wrote feel the most alive out of anyone in the band, and this one in particular builds to an ecstatic state of overwhelming compassion.

"Here We Go" by Jon Brion - An unusual pick, considering it's from a film score, but there's no mistaking the pop sensibility in this track. Not only does Brion sing, but he plays every instrument, and plays them with heart. This is sweeping romantic melancholy in a way that makes other musicians of his generation sound twee and disingenuous.
