Perfect Songs, i.e. abosolute happiness

My "perfect songs" list is illustrious and timeless, not to mention short, and it includes Break on Through and Purple Haze (not to mention Baby Please Don't Go!). I shall not go into that for this post, however. Instead, here are some current offerings, drawn from my recent basement listening excursions, that are giving me "absolute fucking happiness" as TM so astutely coined the experience...

Jefferson Airplane - Blues from an Airplane: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5FxJ1Ac9m4

Jefferson Airplane - Chauffer Blues: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VhTP_JW-jmw

Moby Grape - Hey Grandma: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajcx2ggh6bY

Moby Grape - Fall on You: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkyHfnV_gYc

Beck - Morning: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZo8_IV0IGQ

As of the last report, I'm still going nuts about all the Airplane albums and I really can't stop spinning them all. But on top of that, I've gotten into the whole San-Fransisco/L.A. scenes from '66-'69. I never realized that there was so much quality stuff that I've passed over! Moby Grape (their debut album is fucking incredible!), Quicksilver Messenger Service, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Gene Clark solo, Love, Buffalo Springfield, Zappa, and more...

Forever Changes and the 1st Grateful Dead album are getting heavy play, as well as the next few from the Dead. I've honestly never heard any of this stuff before...it is all with fresh ears! The Byrds CCR, and the Doors are exceptions, I've been familiar with them for some time now, but not the rest! This music is indeed powerful, TM, and it reminds me that it is so worth it to take the time to get around to giving those bands and artists that you may have dismissed in the past a new and proper chance to see if any of it 'grabs hold of you.'

It is so interesting to me too, to find out how interconnected the people in these scenes were. The members of 'Grape and the Airplane overlapping, Jerry Garcia having plentiful influence on "Surrealistic Pillow," the overall 'sound' that gives context to the other bands I've been familiar with...I love learning about it all--even the studios where all this stuff was recorded interest me to no end. And last but not least, the indelible Nicky Hopkins---what a session man! To go from the Kinks to Jeff Beck to the Stones to the Airplane to Quicksilver etc...he was in the thick of so much goodness---

But enough of that for now. As far as new releases go, I like a few, but will save those for another post; suffice it to say that the new Beck album is a lovely stunner.
