One thing we have to realize is that Mick was very aware of the tonal limitations of vinyl as an album got longer. Actually a lot of bands were, so when groups got a touch ore control over the end product, albums got a touch shorter.
Exile is a double album with relatively short sides. The British version of Aftermath is actually not THAT much shorter than Exile - and it was on one disc! (53 minutes and change vs 67 and change)
I think considering the material available, ER could have been a better album - and in fact, there were better potential track lists there were considering before the one we got. One of the big last minute casualties was Think I'm Going Mad, and instead we got --- Send it to Me? Yeccch!
