>> I'm not even sure which "list" you're referring to in the title of your post.
That would be this one:
http://www.keno.org/rolling_stones/brian_jones_keith_richards.htm
>> If PIB is a draw, then so is "Satisfaction"
Actually it's the other way around. To be fair, I think Brian should be given the bigger credit for adding sitar to the song, but to me, that opening guitar part Keith plays makes the song. And again, if you're going to call "Satisfaction" a tie, then this song is a tie as well. Only fair.
>> I don't think that "Not Fade Away" is anything close to a draw either.
Well again, if the criteria is to include great rhythm guitar playing than Keith is leading the charge. And the interweaving between his lead guitar and Brian's harp is my favorite part of the song. Draw for me.
>> Ditto "I Just Want to Make Love to You".
Yes, that's why I said Brian shines brightest on this song.
>> It's a complete mystery to me why so many Stones fans feel the need to "demonstrate" that Brian wasn't that good.
When did I say Brian wasn't that good? I agree with a lot of things Keno said on the list. Don't get me wrong, Brian was great, I loved so much that he did. But why do we have to diss Keith in the process?
>> Keith was a distant third.
I call bullshit on that! Keith played so much good lead guitar on their early recordings to match Brian's slide, harp or whatever else he threw on there. Keith sang some great backup vocals with Mick, though Brian sang a few as well. And here's the crux: Keith, along with Mick, wrote the songs! "Tell Me," "Heart of Stone," "The Last Time," "Satisfaction," "Cloud," "Breakdown," Do I need to go on? I'm sorry, but the songwriter outweighs the instrumentalists. Now granted, Brian had his hand in a few of the Nanker Phelge songs, and I know he co-wrote "Ruby Tuesday," but you can't compare that to the monster riff-maker Keith was.
Okay, so Keith has some unsolved problems with Brian, as he does with Mick and a lot of bands have with each other. So are we just going to automatically disregard his contribution to the Stones because he's an ass towards Brian? Gimme a break!
>> I have never understood why Brian and Keith have to be compared either?
Actually Sweet Virginia, that's the best comment I've heard so far... Indeed, why do we have to "Proove" Brian was better than Keith, or remind everyone Keith's amazing contribution. Both Keith Richards and Brian Jones were integral members of the band along with Charlie, Bill, Mick and even Stu. Keith still remains my favorite Stone, but I'll always respect the man who started this great band: Brian.
