My Top 10 Stones Songs

I've been trying to put together a list to include my favorite tunes, not easy. But I think I've finally put together a list that I'm semi-happy with. Let me know what you think:

10. SATISFACTION - Okay I can't NOT include this song, it's so iconic and so much fun thanks to Keith's driving lead guitar. Love the Motown groove on this song, and Mick is really on fire here with some great lyrics. Even early on, the Stones proved their contention for Greatest rock and roll band in the world.

9. HONKEY TONK WOMEN - I had a really hard time deciding this slot because there are just so many great songs from the group. But this song wins over other contenders because it has a cowbell in the beginning. This is my list, I make the rules! Well apart from that, Charlie's drums sound better than ever recording wise, Keith's riffs are masterful, great solo too, New comer Mick Taylor adds some good riffs, and juxtaposed with a R&B horn section and great backup vocals, it's an all around good time.

8. WILD HORSES - This song has really grown on me. I'm not a big fan of their ballads, but there's something so genuine about Wild Horses, especially knowing that Keith wrote it for his son. I love Mick's singing on it, and it includes some of their most thought-provoking lyrics, "I have my freedom, but I don't have much time." I also like how they wait to bring in Charlie and Bill making that chorus so much more powerful. Beautiful song.

7. DOO DOO DOO DOO DOO (HEARTBREAKER) - Funky as fuck! Love Billy Preston's clav, Mick Taylor's cool guitar solo, and Mick's angry lyrics. That horn section rivals many of the great funk songs to come out at that time. An underrated tune from an underrated album.

6. MIDNIGHT RAMBLER – An epic musical experience. It’s so creepy, matching the lyrics, and exciting at the same time. Keith leads the charge with Mick’s best harmonica playing by his side. It’s kinda hard to explain this tune, you just gotta listen to it!

A little break from this list for some Honorable Mentions:

BROWN SUGAR – Just barely made my list, but a great tune with crazy lyrics... How did they get away with this?

JIGSAW PUZZLE – I’ve always loved this tune, but don’t know too many others who do. Thanks mainly to Brian’s cool slide and mellotron, Nick Hopkin’s piano, as well as Mick’s lyrics, this song was a close contender for this list.

ROCK AND A HARD PLACE – Even though it’s a later tune, it’s a fun one. However, Ronnie Wood is playing on it, so it is disqualified from this list. Again, my list, I make the rules… Ok all kidding aside, that solo is fucking awesome!

5. YOU CAN’T ALWAYS GET WHAT YOU WANT – Another musical experience, LET IT BLEED is full of them. I think this song includes Mick’s best singing. He’s really into it here, accompanied by some great backup vocals… and a choir! The song has kind of a gospel feel to it highlighted by Al Kooper’s keyboards and some great riffing from Keith. You’ll certainly get what you want listening to this song.

4. JUMPING JACK FLASH – Pure Stones rock ‘n roll! If Bill wrote this awesome riff, he deserves a writing credit and a medal! That riff is infectious and the chorus is equally awesome. Keith’s bass also lays down one of the tightest grooves the group ever played. Another key element to this song that nobody seems to mention are the harmonicas at the end of the song: so cool! Easily one of my favorite tunes.

3. MOONLIGHT MILE – Just like Wild Horses, this song has grown on me more and more, although I loved this tune the first time I heard it. It’s a beautiful song featuring some of Mick’s best vocals and lyrics. Mick Taylor’s lead guitar also adds so much depth. The rhythm section is really dynamic as are the strings. It’s the only tune that close such a heavyweight album like STICKY FINGERS.

2. GIMME SHELTER – This used to be my favorite Stones tune, and still gets the number 2 spot on this list. I have never heard another cooler opening than this gem. Mick sings so well accompanied by powerhouse vocalist Merry Clayton. That crack in her voice during the vocal solo is one of my favorite moments in a Stones track. Keith also plays some of his best lead guitar here along with a cool harp solo by Mick. Add some colorful piano playing from Nicky Hopkins and percussion, you’ve got one of the greatest songs of all time here.

And the #1 Best Stones song is:

CAN’T YOU HEAR MY KNOCKING – A song that you will never find on a greatest hits album. Really, just listen to Keith’s opening guitar riff and tell me this isn’t one of the greatest songs in all rock history. Joined shortly by Charlie’s head-bopping beat and Bill’s simple yet effective bass part, you know you’re in for a treat. Mick is on top of his game here, with some great backups by Keith. Billy Preston’s keyboards are also a nice touch. And then, the song changes dramatically into a groovy Santana-like jam. Bobby Keys plays his best sax solo on a Stones tune followed by Mick Taylor who plays one of the best guitar solos of all time. It all comes together for an exciting climax. This is the Stones at their peak. Every time I hear this song, I’m reminded as to why it’s my favorite of theirs.
