A few threads down, somebody thought Chicago inspires the Stones more than most cities. I know there are the before-my-day stories about their early trips to Chess records and their appearances at the Checkerboard Lounge and Double Door. Personally, I've always thought NY is unfortunately where they do their best work, but I can be convinced otherwise.
Anyhow, just a few rambling thoughts about the Stones and my beloved hometown as the concerts approach.
1) Did anybody see them at Soldier Field on their last tour? It was an outdoor concert on an INCREDIBLY cold October night - even for Chicago. Does anybody remember Midnight Rambler as I do? It was f*cking INSPIRED!!! An incredible rendition that I swear was somewhere on the ballpark of 15-20 minutes. That one song made the whole evening for me!!
Having said that, I did have a little weed that night, so I'm wondering if my memory of Midnight Rambler is a little embellished. Anybody else see the show?
2) Aragon Ballroom on the 40 Licks tour ... #47 in line!!!! By far my favorite show!!! Unfortunately, I missed the Stones in their prime and there were so many fabulous rarities in this show. I wish more were like this one.
3) My favorite Chicago story - The woman who cuts my hair is a COMPLETE music freak. She goes to everything despite being in her 60s, and she never pays. She knows every promoter and security guard in the city.
She's my hero because she saw the Stones and Stevie Wonder in the early 70s. She's just a little thing, and got thrown onstage and landed at Keith's feet.
4) If you've stayed with me this long through my message, you deserve a prize. Here's a little something. There's got to be a small show in Chicago, right? How many nights are they here?
Here's my theory for the small venue - Buddy Guy's bar on Thursday night. Yes, he has his own smallish bar. Go there if you're from out of town.
When the Stones announced, I checked the schedule of a few potential venues. Nothing stuck out to me. However, in the last couple weeks, I'm almost positive the Thursday night schedule at Buddy Guy's has changed. It's now listed as a "private event." Two nights after the first show? The night before the second show? Maybe?
The food isn't bad there. If you're staying downtown, it might be worth grabbing lunch around noon on Thursday to see if anything is announced. And if I'm correct and you get a ticket based on this message, please grab me a ticket. Of course, I'll pay you back.
Keep in mind this is a COMPLETE GUESS on my part. I have ZERO inside information.
5) Oh, and BTW, did I tell you I'm looking for someone who might have an available $85 ticket? :)
Thanks for indulging me.
