RE: R.I.P Ray Manzerek

Wow. That's the first single I ever bought. And with my own money too! (69 cents plus tax.) I was fascinated by the flipside too.

69 cents must have seemed like a king's ransom at the time. LOL! I'm glad to see that I'm not the only person for whom this single has special meaning. Mine was already well worn by the time my BF gave it to me, and being passed on to me did nothing to improve its condition. Although after a few months, I got myself a copy of a greatest hits album called 13, which contained both songs (and not the truncated LMF, either!) I still have that single BTW. It's in a box on a hard-to-reach shelf, but it's still there.

Before LMF was a hit, I saw The Doors on a Saturday night TV show called "Clay Cole's Discotek". I thought the name of the group was rather odd, and Jim Morrison was screaming some song into the mic, and standing still.

I don't think I've ever seen that performance. But the band went on the Ed Sullivan Show to promote "Light My Fire", and ole Ed asked Jim not to sing the word "higher" (girl we couldn't get much higher), the same way Mick had been asked to sing "Let's spend some time together" instead of the actual words. Where Mick had complied grudgingly, rolling his eyes every time he sang the altered lyrics, Jim just went ahead and sang the song the way it was written. Sullivan was steaming, and the band was never invited to appear on his show again.

Jim had such a magnetic personality and stage presence that it was easy to forget the really strong musicians around him. For shame! Ray, Robbie and John were a big part of the music, and their erratic singer (to borrow Grace Slick's description) never would have become what he became without them.

RIP Ray.
