The band my boyfriend is in was signed to an indie label in 2010. They had dozens of songs that they played a different setlist nearly every night before the deal. As soon as they signed, their first album was released with only 11 tracks, and of those 11, only 2 were tracks they were rruly proud of. They are working on a follow up, but even as a band with a small fan-base, their creative process is often interrupted by what will sell. He has played songs for me that are wonderful only to have them completely dismissed by the label. He tells me all the time that the politcs, even with an indie label, make him want to just go back to being unknown. Pretty sad, considering his career is just starting. Nothing makes him happier than just playing music. I dont think his band is the next great big thing - I dont think they are awful either - but I understand about bands not being allowed to grow.
Perhaps, this is why my musical tastes are drawn to this era. I love creativity. I love different. And I love music with meaning, purpose, or even without so long as it touches your soul.
