I didn't even know he was ill! What a shock it was to come to Gasland and read this.
I fell in love with the Doors one summer night in 1978. We'd gone to my new boyfriend's house and I was rummaging through his music collection when I stumbled upon a single: "Light My Fire" on side A, "The Crystal Ship" on side B. He saw my fascination with the single and said "take it, it's yours". It took a while before I could listen to the disc but when I did, I was floored not by side A (I knew that song, who didn't?) but by side B. To this day, it's my favourite Doors song and Ray's piano is a big part of the reason why I love the song so much.
In one of the Doors documentaries, Grace Slick tells a story of when the two bands were touring Europe together in 1968, and one night Jim was too zonked to go onstage. So Ray filled in for him, singing all the songs while still playing his parts on the piano (with his right hand) and on the bass keyboard (with his left hand). Truly an exceptional musician!
RIP Ray, you'll be sorely missed.
