You know - every day, the world loses more and more of the generation(s) that created the last great batch of creativity. There's just nobody coming up in the arts that compare to the actors, the directors, the musicians, the promoters, the painters, the poets - all being replaced by corporate shills...for the most part rehashing what the great ones did at 5% of the potency.
Burroughs, Hunter Thompson, Jones, Lennon, Bukowski, Morrison, Harrison, Garcia, B.Graham - that took longer to type than to think of! All gone - never to be replaced. History once replaced it's heroes with new ones. Like the Stones - once they are gone, there is NOBODY who can compare...even now, at 65-70, they have more charisma than 50 bands combined. Even the best now can't approach the creativity, the output, the longevity. Most bands put out an album every 2 years - minimum. The Stones - and since we are talking about Ray Manzarek in this thread - The Doors were SO prolific. The Doors, Soft Parade, LA Woman, Morrison Hotel, Strange Days, Waiting for the Sun - from January 1967 to April of 1971: 6 Albums! With little to no filler.(Soft Parade not included :) Two albums in 1967 alone. Who can match this? With that kind of power and emotion - today? The Who, The Beatles - Once gone, never replaced by bands with even 1/3 of the kick.
Anyway, I'll shut up now...I've got a pain in my soul for all that is no more everytime we lose someone from this era. That burst of creativity will never again be equaled because it can never be new again...it's a one time shot. Anything that can equal it will have to be something different.
From watching Kanye West try to make something that - I guess - resembles music on Saturday Night Live, I don't see much hope. People pay money for that shit?
New bands that are good, aren't allowed to grow...etc.
