set list percentages

Up front disclaimer: I'm admittedly every bit as nitpicky, finicky, persnickety and ridiculous as any Stones fan out there:) so just remember this is intended in good fun:

I crunched some numbers (*as I see them) and have concluded that in San Jose the setlist contained 54.5% content that Mick Tayor either originally helped define as a classic live Stones number and/or was a part of the original studio version. (Those 12 out of 22 songs, which = 54.5%, are: IORR, Gimme Shelter, Bitch, Honky Tonk Woman, Happy, Midnight Rambler, Tumbling Dice, Brown Sugar, Sympathy, You Can't Always Get What You Want, J.J. Flash, and Satisfaction). By perfectly reasonable and very biased logic, that means MT should have played on 12 songs, not 2. Of course, 2 songs out of 22 is about 10%, which is exactly how much time MT was with the Stones compared to their overall existence.

Ronnie, of course, shouldn’t be pushed aside, especially when he does seem to be playing rather well, but in no way should excitement for MT to play on more cuts be equated with disrespect to Ronnie. (Although, if you wanted to take it obviously too far you could argue that he should only have played on approximately 16-17 songs or so. Ronnie’s been in the band 79% of the Stones’ 50 years, but the setlist contained only 49% Ronnie-era-defined cuts… I need a statistician here, does that technically equate to about 17 out of 22 songs, ratio-wise??). Hmm, anyway, since Ronnie is clearly the longtime and current lead guitar player let’s push that aside.

Bottom line: Although we all kind of know that MT is musically superior, we can just-as-readily admit that even by ‘Some Girls’ Ronnie was quite indispensable as a Rolling Stone, and so ultimately us Stones fans truly do love them both, I think. And we simply want to see them both this particular year, this particular tour--that is all!! One last way to look at it would be to ask: Why does MT get the same per/show allotment as Fogerty, Waits, Clapton, Beck, (let alone Stefani, Florence, and Urban [yuck!]) who were never in the band at all??
