The songwriters create a publishing company, and thepublishing company deals with ASCAP, BMI or whatever royalty company is in the country you're talking about. Radio stations do keep track of every song, but you can buy blanket licenses, so I don't know how you get your money if you're just a little band with a few airplays. My guess is you collect not quite enough to pay what it costs to belong to ASCAP. But if you don't belong and you write a hit song, I think you'll end up with nothing.

I think we call that "freedom."
