I recall reading many years ago in Rolling Stone - it must have been in the mid 70s, that his family had his body removed from the grave in the middle of the night when nobody was around, and they didn't tell anybody so that wherever it was moved to, nobody would ever know the new location and that way fans could never visit the real grave site. When the family was asked to confirm the story, they didn't, for reasons noted above.
I never heard or read this. It could be true, but I doubt it. Père Lachaise is closed at night and going in there after hours would be tresspassing. I'm pretty sure that digging up a body at any time of day or night goes against all kinds of rules and regulations. And getting permission from the French would mean that someone knew about it. Especially in such an over-regulated country!
This strikes me as an urban myth, but I could be wrong.
