At the show last night, Mick T. played very well on Midnight Rambler...towards the end of the song, while Ronnie played a solo, he was dancing - without his hands on the guitar for an extended time...the song ended and the next began...from my much improved seating situation, I could see behind Charlie and into the guitar tech's desk perfectly...well, for 3 songs or so after Mick T's time on stage, he sat at that desk...and I watched him with my binoculars - which from where I was gave me lines on the face clarity. I don't feel right even saying much about it as Mick T was having a "private moment", but he looked sooo sad. My sister said - "is he crying?" after we both watched him wipe his cheeks with his hand - it could have been sweat so don't quote me that he was - but he wasn't smiling...for Tumbling Dice and 2 other songs, he sat there and watched Ronnie's back and Chuck's front while the guitar tech's worked around him talking about him - blatantly - from a few feet behind into each other's ears...you could tell the conversation was "what's he doing? I can't tune/do my work with him sitting there..." all while smiling...but Mick T wasn't. Were he not in public I would not be sharing this and although I don't think anyone Stone related reads the board, I'd hate for him to be "spoken to" about it either...after the few songs, he stood up and Ted Beaumont Roquefort Newman Jones, Jr., the IV led him through the door at the base of the tongue on the stage...I woulda never thought I'd see it, but he really looked liked he was upset that he wasn't out there playing Exile songs and questioning why he left. (I know that sounds quite specific, but I stand by it...I hope this tour doesn't prove to be too much for him.)
Anyway, I was going to touch on this in my review of the show but will leave it, for the most part, at that. I never joined in much when the Ronnie/Mick T. discussions were much heavier, so those who know me should know that I'm not one to play something like this up. Again, were it not in public, I would have thought better about saying anything.
Maybe I am reading too much into it...so - without any of my interpretations/inferences (i'll try), I'll put it a different way and allow you to decide as if you're seeing it:
Last night as Little Mick's spot ended, he took a seat at the guitar tech desk - on stage, behind Charlie...he was sitting exactly where the tech's lay guitars flat to tune, intonate, fix - whatever...the desk lamp that they use illuminated Mick T's face for several songs. He did not smile and looked stage right directly at Chuck and when Ronnie moved back, at Ronnie's back. After sitting there for 10-12 minutes, he stood up and was led - not off to the wings, but through the back door in the stage.
God bless you Mick Taylor. You played well last night and your decision to leave the band may have led to some hard times, but I doubt you would have graced that stage (with your newfound joy of being up there by the way) had you stayed in the band.
We all know where he was headed.
Sorry for the long post about it. Major part of the night.
Syph
