I think there are a LOT of factors involved:
1. The layoff since the last tour. Six years is a LONG time to keep the casual fan interested and involved. McCartney still goes out every couple of years...so do Dylan and a few others. And again, THEY charge what are 'reasonable' ticket prices - certainly no $1000 tops. Also, the ABB tour left a bad taste in quite a few people's mouths I bet. The cancellations....the poor/mediocre shows..the Keith/Blondie Chapman rumors all certainly had to hurt.
2. For a 50th Anniversary Tour, this sure looks like the last couple of tours. THIS is where I think Mick (and yes, its Mick - as Bill puts it, when Andrew left, Mick said 'we will be managing ourselves', which meant MICK would be managing them.) absolutely BLEW IT. There is maybe only one other classic band (Eagles) which has the potential of putting out the same band on stage at ONCE, that was with them back in 1972. Yet, they don't even ASK Bill to come along, and they drag poor MT all around for ONE song! Yet they have the balls to charge premium prices for essentially the Same Stuff. Then Mick for some reason feels the need to drag out not one, but TWO 'contemporary' stars at show, none of whom would be able to hold a candle to a Stones show with both Bill and Mick T involved - for more than one song each.
3. Poor support product. I mean, ANOTHER compilation?? Ok - two 'new' tunes, but at every show (and mine), Doom and Gloom and the other one are instant bathroom/beer stand fillers. With all the archive releases, would it have really hurt to work with ABKCO and put that ultimate outtake collection out?
5. And finally, ever since Mick started selling the tours to production companies, he frankly doesn't give a shit. He and the band get their money up front, and thats all they care about. Ever since Steel Wheels, these tours just so freaking overdone, with ticket prices to match. I always thought before that eventually hurt them...and maybe it has.
