Same happened with Scott Brown, with an endgame "He's like US" strategy. Romney did a similar schtick, but we've all come to know and lose all respect for the real Mitt Romney.
The lesson may be that when a campaign turns into a "he/she's just like us" message, it's akin to when an animal submissively rolls onto its back and playfully kicks its little feet at you. The advertising this year said so little, but perhaps simultaneously far more than the candidates ever did.
To be fair, I think the the ads on all sides were terrible. Just very interesting when you're only emotionally or intellectually engaged by the unintended subtext.
