RE: Turner's 14 Greatest Films Ever

Turner, have you seen both "Paper Moon" and "The Long Goodbye?" Both are lesser known classics from the '70's New Hollywood period, and I can't recommend them, enough. Anyway...

The Sight & Sound Poll is one of few I take seriously, since it asks the most influential filmmakers and critics of today what films drive them. It would be like if they polled talented songwriters and musicians and made a list from that, except we'd probably end up with "Dylan, Beatles, Stones, etc..." every time.

I agree with some of your picks, though I think others are more akin to favorites than films that have sent waves creatively, and have elevated the craft. I mean, I'm pretty ecstatic whenever I see the Third Man on a list like yours, and I think it's awesome that you love it as much as I do (it's in my own top five personal favs), but if we're talking influential film noir, it would have to be Fritz Lang's "M," which pretty much created the genre, single-handedly. Same with Pulp Fiction; Tarantino wouldn't be Tarantino without the French New Wave of the 1960's and filmmakers like Godard, which in turn influenced the New Hollywood period of the 1970's that you and I apparently both love.

As for Casablanca, I think it's reputation is based more on mainstream popularity and acceptance than any kind of innovation or creative storytelling. It's more akin to Forrest Gump, in that it's a flawed but enjoyable Hollywood movie. And yes, there probably hasn't been a better children's film than Willy Wonka, but movies would probably be the same without it. Again, I love that film. Now that I think about it, it's one of few that I would consider "perfect."

As for your pick of "Wizard of Oz," I'm a little baffled that it's not in the official top ten. Same for "Empire Strikes Back." I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, and guess that they're sitting just outside, in the 15-11 spots. What frustrates me more is this year's lack of the Archer's films on the list. I'll take these two British filmmakers over Hitchcock any day, and the number of epic masterpieces they created is absolutely stunning. If you haven't checked out "The Red Shoes," The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp," "A Matter of Life and Death," "Black Narcissus," or "Peeping Tom," see them sooner than later. You won't be sorry.
