Can you actually sit and listen to a Classic Rock station all day without turning it off? No way. I bet you couldn't do it as the only thing you listen to all week, either. It's not because another shot of REO Speedwagon is just a "been there, done that" kind of experience, it's because it flat out sucks ass. So does Styx, Ted Nugent, Journey, Bad Co., Boston - I could go on and on but I'm not gonna.
Sure, Neil Young, The Stones, The Beatles, The Kinks, Yardbirds - hell there's a million great bands. But there's five shitty ones for every great one. And when you just get to the good band level, there's tons of them, but they have tons of shitty albums amongst them. You can take a band like Aerosmith and say, "yeah, they were great!" But what great Rock band has albums like Done With Mirrors, Night in the Ruts and then gets back in the game by getting someone else to write them hit songs I can't even remember the titles of five years later?
I realize that some of it has to do with personal taste, but a huge chunk of Classic Rock is Arena shit like Foreigner. I know the Classic Rockers all like to pretend they loved The Ramones and Motorhead now, but they didn't like them back when Rock was king. They hated those bands and refused to give them a chance so they could kick back and pop a cold one to the latest yawnfest from Jackson Browne or Molly Hatchet.
There's some great Classic Rock, but most of it is lousy. And I'll agree that most new music is lousy, too. But lots of it is fantastic. But you won't hear it turning on the radio because they're too busy pushing back catalog sales of bands that should have disappeared decades ago.
