I'm guessing that the "lights on all the Christmas trees went out" refers to a blackout that occurred some December.

Funny, that could be it, but I always just took it as meaning simply that he wanted to go out to California after Xmas was over and start the new year out there, since southern California is one place many go to escape the cold of winter.
