Right, if you looked at them in that light. But The Experience was a back-up band that was put together for Jimi by his manager Chas Chandler, just like later on when his Band of Gypsys was put together. Jimi didn't even know the other two guys in The Experience until they were hired to play with him.
You are 100% correct about the Doors, no Jim Morrison and no Doors, period!
I was thinking about this thread tonight a bit, in a way this kind of question can be taken in different ways. Some will insist that even a solo artist is still the frontman of their backup band - and that is 100% true. But I guess most assume a frontman would mean non-solo acts, since solo acts have to stand out and be upfront.
