Does anyone know the significance of the following lines from "Winter"?
"But I been burnin' my bell, book and candle
And the restoration plays have all gone 'round"
I was studying the Restoration period the other day and learned that it took place from 1660-1689 after Charles II took the throne in England. Something about restoring the Court after Stuart, and the Anglican vs. Catholic churches.
But why does Mick make reference to it in this song—and in the same line in which he mentions California, which wasn't designated as such, yet, in the 1600s?
Also, what does he mean by his "bell, book, and candle"? I can see burning a candle. And perhaps the book is referencing book-burning as in censorship. But burning a bell?
He sings these lines more than once in the song, and with great feeling. So they must mean something.
