Admittedly, I'm on a bit a Doors kick, but even I were not, I'd have to say Morrison is just about the best, but only when he was really on. When he wasn't too fucked up, he had it all: an absolutely intoxicating voice, a mystical, powerful stage presence where he was almost more of an actor than singer. He adapted his voice in unique ways for a whole host of songs, changing it for the atmosphere and scenery of each piece. He could go from soft Sinatra-like phrasing to all-out screaming frenzy and not have it sound untoward at all. And I love that he engaged in lots of banter between songs with the audience.
Musically, the band followed him, giving emphasis to the actual label of "front" man. Everything was played, arranged, and focused around Morrison, who himself was really just the translator of the the creation, and they always took their cues from him. And that's not taking anything away from them, either, since they were all astonishing musicians.
Other than Morrison, (and Mick), I like Jack White. His mix of crushing performances and his unabashed bending of the truth create a mysterious blend of legend-already-in-making.
