Of course Chuck Berry can't be a frontman, since he is a solo artist, and even though he had a backup band, it was/is his band, which isn't being billed, he is the main act, therefore he can't be what is called a true frontman of a band. He has to stand out all of the time!
With the Doors, I would have to disagree, although I agree Jim did have a way with his stage presence, unlike most others. But you got to look at the entire picture. Jim ruined a lot of shows because he was too drunk or stoned to play, and a great frontman doesn't do that. He also was known on some nights to be rude to his audience, again, nothing great in that. Being that I lived many many years with a total Jim Morrison freak, the two of us would have this debate about Jim often, and that's why I'm countering here, it's more like an automatic response left over from years past. I always felt he was terrible in that regard, but I of course respect your views DA, even if I disagree with you.
I like your example of Ronnie Van Zant, yes indeed, letting the others shine when it was their turn, that is so very important. Sadly I never saw that great band live, wish I had, and would have, if that plane hadn't crashed.
Of the bands I've seen, well, nobody comes close to MJ, but I know, we can't note him. So I'll go with Alice Cooper. He was excellent live as a frontman, before he went solo! Truth is, that entire band was on fire when they played live, and like Ronnie, he knew when to sit back and let the other band members take over. He is credited as being the first person to introduce theatrical rock and roll up on stage for a reason, as he started all of that while in the band Alice Cooper in the late '60s. People like Bowie came about after him, even if a lot of people don't realize that. Plus don't get me wrong, Bowie was as good or maybe better than the Coop, but Bowie wasn't a true frontman, as he was always solo, yet in his case, during his Ziggy days, he played the role of a frontman for the Spiders, even if the band was really just a part of the act and was actually Bowie's backing band.
I'll close in noting that this question has been on my "to ask" list for our rock poll, for a few years now. Guess I never asked it since I felt there were too many Stones fans voting in that poll and MJ would win in a landslide. But these days that's not the case anymore, plus I think even non-Stones fans know just how great Mick is when it comes to fronting a band up on stage. So, and IMO, he deserves and should win such a poll question anyway. One day in the distant future, this question will finally be asked, and yes, the way it was asked here was excellent, we should exclude MJ so we can hear about others, so thanks for asking this and I do hope others join in with their answers.
