I saw Rainbow way back when I was a kid, and Ritchie Blackmore busted a string on about the second song, got all pissy and left. His guitar tech played all his parts, and just stood a little out of the lights so no one could tell (we were really close and the guy was excellent, but it wasn't Blackmore). Anyway, Ronnie James Dio, all four feet of him, looking like a goblin for the most part (that was not a handsome man!), was fantastic. Just a ball of fire and he had the audience eating out of his hand. I think he did one more album with Blackmore and left to have his own successful band, and a decent stint fronting Black Sabbath.

For a woman I think I'll have to pick Christina Amphlett of The DiVinyls. I've never seen anything like her. Every guy walking out of the show swore she was performing just for him. She was beyond great.
