To bend the rules of your question a little further I give Chuck Berry as an answer. Chuck was so phenominal a talent at doing what frontmen do he didn't even need a regular band behind him onstage. His energy, charisma, talent and showmanship was so dynamic, he could carry a show all by himself. I was fortunate enough to witness this fact personally in 1979.
