Some favorites (ssc)

Well, all y'all seem to be dipping into the Classic Rock pretty hard on this one. I'll just pick five oldies I always liked.

Stones - Rip this Joint. Man, I love everything about this one. It's perfect in every way.

Steely Dan - Doctor Wu. I have no idea what this is supposed to be about and I've been listening to it since I was a kid. I just love the part when they get to the last verse and Fagen sings, "Katy lies, you can see it in her eyes. But imagine my surprise when I saw you.." It's not just the lyrics, it's the feel of those and the music right at that spot that just get me somewhere good.

David Werner - The Ballad of Trixie Silver. Man, this is one of my favorite songs. I know, no one ever heard it outside of Pittsburgh or Cleveland, but I've loved it since I was a kid.

Lucero - Starlite Diner. I like long songs. I probably like short songs more, but Starlite Diner is just an epic and wonderful story about sitting in a diner by yourself. I love it.

Paul Westerberg - AAA. This was technically one of his Grandpaboy songs, but since he's technically Grandpaboy it's just a vicious circle. Super great poppy goodness with really weird dreamlike lyrics. I love the bridge where it's all kind of falling apart musically (It's kind of clangy, if not falling apart), and Paul whispers "you've got a nerve.." Man, it's just cool.

I think I like songs that are really visceral, at least to me. I can appreciate great poetry but I think just a clever turn of phrase or a word that goes with a chord works even more. At least on me. Now tomorrow, I'd probably pick five different songs. In fact, I'd probably pick five different songs in ten minutes!
