I used to be puzzled about whether they started in '62 or '63, but then just concluded—long before Keith said anything—that it had to be '63 b/c of the Charlie Factor. Keith has nothing to do with my thinking about this.

I figure that there are three remaining members of the original Stones and the date should start at the point all three were together. Otherwise, we're just celebrating the Mick-and-Keith show. Celebrating in 2013 a great way to honor Charlie: he only missed 1962 by a month!

It's true that this band has lasted so many years that key members have come and gone. (It's really wonderful that we can even have this debate)! I agree that the group has morphed many times. I think of it as Brian, Mick Taylor, Stu, and Bill all having departed and Ronnie having arrived within that span of 50 years—framed by the constant of the original three.
