RE: RE: This Thursday, July 12th is their 50th

I don't know if it has ever been settled whether it was Chapman or Mick Avory who actually played that night.

I think it was settled on the several different occasions when Mick Avory flat out said he not only wasn't there for that first gig, but he also stated that he never, ever, played a live gig with the Stones. He said that he only ever rehearsed with them, that was it. The reason the question still comes up today is because Keith can't remember things correctly and he falsely reported in his book that it was Avory. But the dude says he wasn't there, so he wasn't there, and Keith just made up yet another story for his book because he can't remember everything that happened in the '60s.

When did the Rollin(g)Stones become a real working band? ...... That Marquee gig was an anomaly that skews the perspective on everything: Koerner neeeded someone to hold down his Thursday night spot, Mick and Brian hustled together these guys who had been rehearsing together, and Brian came up with the band name while thinking of the line 'Im a rolling stone' from Mannish Boy - NOT Rolling Stone Blues, as the legend goes. So after that, can it really be called a band?

Of course you would call that a band! If they weren't a band, then what the fuck were they? Are you saying that any local band that plays together and changes a member or two every so often, are not true bands? They had a name, they were called the "Rollin' Stones", the 3 most important members of the group, the ones who would make them famous in time, were all there, and they got paid for that gig and many, many other gigs in '62. They just weren't the final version of the band yet, but the true final version didn't happen till Bill left in '91, so maybe the Stones weren't a true band until that time? This is really so ridiculous to debate; the Stones started in 1962, not in '63, or '69, or '75, or in '91. They started and were a true band in 1962 and to take that away from them just because Keith isn't ready to play this year and he wishes to cash in on the 50th year deal next year, is no reason to change history. If they have to wait till next year to tour, fine, it can be called the 51 year tour, and they will make just as much money billing it that way, and will be stating the truth, too!
