RE: This Thursday, July 12th is their 50th

I don't know if it has ever been settled whether it was Chapman or Mick Avory who actually played that night. What is really odd about Chapman occasionally playing with the proto Stones at that time, is that he was also playing with Bill's band at the time, The Cliftons, who were certainly playing more - and better paying - gigs than the Rollin' Stones wee playing in 62. This brings up the point of the question before us now:

When did the Rollin(g)Stones become a real working band? When you look at the list of 'gigs' that the Rollin' Stones 'worked' in 1962, probably 80-90% of those were technically not much more than 'public rehearsals'. That Marquee gig was an anomaly that skews the perspective on everything: Koerner neeeded someone to hold down his Thursday night spot, Mick and Brian hustled together these guys who had been rehearsing together, and Brian came up with the band name while thinking of the line 'Im a rolling stone' from Mannish Boy - NOT Rolling Stone Blues, as the legend goes. So after that, can it really be called a band? No regular drummer; sometimes not even a bass player for Petes sake. Gigs, such as they are, far and few between - and even then, most of them are setting up the gear and playing for themselves. Mick is still very full time at LSE, Brian and Keith are basically sitting in at Edith Grove, starving and still learning to play together. If you could borrow Mr Peobody's Wayback Machine, and head to the Ealing or such in mid to late 1962, you would be very, very disappointed I am afraid. But - if you would scoot ahead to say, March 1963, THEN you would see the difference Bill and Charlie made. Its the difference between those almost unlistenable demos made in in October 62, and the IBC sessions done in March of 63, which are in many ways THE jewels of the unreleased material still out there.

So - is Thursday REALLY the start of The Stones? Maybe...but its not like they went roaring down the highway....more like a first step...and then a LOT of stopping and stumbling before they really got their feet - i.e., Bill and Charlie.
