To me, the Stones wouldn't be the Stones without Charlie.
I agree, it's true for today, but not 50 years ago. They were called "The Rolling Stones" before he officially joined in Jan of '63. Plus, Charlie played with them in '62, before he was a official member, so just what date would you go by if you only say they started when Charlie started to play with them? It still was 50 years ago this year.
I would love their first show to be no sooner than January 2013. Maybe with a huge celebration on the 14th, in honor of their first gig as a whole band.
They could do that as long as they called it something like "50 years since Charlie officially joined". But it would not be their true 50th anniversary as a band, this year is. Plus, what about in 1969 when Mick Taylor joined up, they were a new Stones, a different complete band, and then again around '75 when Ronnie joined. They had different re-starts, but only one first, official gig.
Plus we are forgetting about Stu, he was an official member back in '62, and according to Keith he ran the band back then (even if that isn't true according to everybody else who was around then). But how can we not say 1962 was the year the Rolling Stones started and played their first gig, when it clearly was?
