Sorry, but I totally disagree with you, since I clearly remember what went down in 1964. Do you recall the time? Most parents hated the Beatles and the Stones.
I flat out knew many kids who's parents forbid them from listening to the Beatles in their home. Of course, that didn't work, the kids listened anyway, and I always felt I and my sisters were lucky that my parents were not like that. In fact, my dad was one of the few of his generation who liked the Beatles and saw the talent they held, perhaps because he was a songwriter himself. Yet he still hated the long hair look, just like all the parents did. The Beatles were far from being "clean cut".
There is no question the Stones were looked at as being worst than the Beatles in their look, yet hair wise they really didn't look that much different. But the Stones were early '60s punks, and that was what the parents hated more, they did things like pissing on garage walls, etc.. True, the Fabs were punks too, and perhaps the way they dressed made a difference for some parents, but not most. But there isn't anyway you could call them clean cut, since they weren't, not going by how things were back then.
Yes, I've read in books about both bands on how the Fabs were clean-cut compared to the Stones, but that wasn't the truth in reality, not for US parents who hated the look of both bands, even if the Beatles were a bit tamer looking.
