RE: RE: RE: RE: Brian Epstein

Epstein had enough foresight to manufacture that squeaky clean image that helped endear them to the parents of the buying public

Are you kidding? What "squeaky clean image" did the parents approve of? They were looked at as long-haired freaks by parents of that time. Yes, Epstein tried to make them out to be "clean cut" in their actions, and in the cloths that they wore, and perhaps in the UK that did work a bit, but it didn't work at all in the US. The uptight US WW2 generation of parents were horrified of the long hair look that the Beatles and other rock bands had. Up until 1964, no males had hair growing down over their ears, nor did any guys wear their hair in bangs, it was unheard of and looked at as being dirty or as a guy wanting to look like a girl. In the US anyway, "clean-cut" on a guy meant very short hair, and thanks to the 1950s conservative movement, all males in the US had short hair, other than the Beats of the '50s and early '60s, who in turn - with the help of the Beatles and rock music, started the hippie movement.

Remember when they first came to America and that first press conference they held? One of the first question was "When are you boys getting a haircut?" The press tried to make fun of them at first because of their look. Of course, the Baby Boomer kids loved the look - and their music, so it didn't matter what their parent had to say, if anything, it helped make the Beatles even more popular.

Not to say Epstein didn't help out the Beatles, he clearly did, but his push to make them into something that they weren't, didn't work, and the Beatles hated it and dropped that look early on.
