My dad smoked from 1965 to 2002, when he was diagnosed with sqamous cell lung cancer. They removed 3 of his lungs (or, lobes) and he had chemo and radiation and all that and in 05 was announced cancer-free. He quit when he was diagnosed. The doctor told him the tumors had probably started 10 years before. I remember after healing from surgery, he went on a road trip across Ireland with my mom and her rapidly-degenerating, but always batshit anyways mother and he said that if he could get through that trip with the two of them while driving on the wrong side of the road without a smoke, he could say he had well kicked them.
Anyways, it *can* be treated, but as has been said, it's different for everybody.
