RE: RE: RE: Why did Keith give up drinking?

I never heard of herbal cigarettes, but as you said, Ronnie would be just as bad off with them because of the emphysema. I heard years ago that using Drum brand cigarettes were supposedly better (or at least less bad) for one's health, as there are fewer impurities in them than in the packaged kind. Either way, Ronnie's best bet is to just quit for good. It might be hard though with trying to give up drinking too (though the last I heard some months ago, he had been sober for 16 months and counting). Maybe he could indulge in weed exclusively, though with that, the only option would be avoid smoking it.

I think though that COPD and emphysema are reason enough to stop smoking, in that one can die from emphysema (even without lung cancer). That's awful about how Sue had to go through what she did, even though she was proactive by taking care of herself by quitting smoking when she learned she had COPD.

Good for your father to have quit back in the '60s. It led to his longevity by having quit when he did. I have a feeling that people can smoke for a certain number of years before they get to the point of no return -- in other words, regularly smoking for several years and quitting by a certain time prevents the devastating effects of smoking (though I realize that everyone is different). For example, my father was lucky in that quit after 35 years of smoking just in time before it wreaked havoc on his health. He quit when he realized that he didn't want to be like his cousin, who had learned that he had a "bit of emphysema." I thought that my father dodged the bullet with that, as he never had COPD, asthma, shortness of breath, or anything associated with the effects of smoking. Even still, a couple of spots are on his lungs (as recently discovered), though now he's got cancer unrelated to the lungs. It all made me realize that when he quit, I was going to need to quit as well, and thus, I quit three years later (at the age of 22).

Mick was wise to have quit back when he was in his 20s still. I didn't know what precipitated his having quit until now, though it's interesting that he nipped the habit in the bud by quitting when he did. It saved his voice for the long haul.

Keith, on the other hand, must think he is invincible or something, or somehow knows intuitively that he has the "gene" to protect him. Still, he isn't immune to the effects of smoking -- listen to his voice and look at his face (all evidence of being a long-term smoker). Yet, I like his singing voice that became evidently changed by about the Steel Wheels album.
