It might be the gene as you said. And, Keith is still alive, so no one can assess anything until it's over.
Regarding drinking: Yeah, it may have been that Keith just had to stop entirely to preserve his health and he was able to do it. So yes, good for him if that's true. Now you've got me wondering if he actually did quit, though I had read it somewhere (though of course it doesn't mean it's necessarily true).

The bigger thing about smoking, for anyone, is not as much lung cancer, but COPD as mentioned. Same with emphysema. But again, perhaps it's the gene, as mentioned, that has protected Keith to date.
